Katoomba North Public is a truly community orientated school situated in Darug Gundungurra land in the Blue Mountains, with parents running the breakfast club, canteen, uniform shop and regular activities through the P&C.
The Aboriginal community have a strong representation in the school with Aboriginal students actively representing their families and culture through the Student Representative Council, Welcome to Country, school assemblies, Sports and music.
The school is proud of its positive environment. In 2016, the school boasted a 0 suspension record. KNPS teachers are committed to the education of all students, demonstrating best practice, innovative teaching and extra curricular activities. The school provides literacy and numeracy support as well as speech therapy for students requiring extra help.
KNPS’s Principal, Cathy Clark, is committed to a whole school community sustainability plan. Recycling, composting, and reusable cutlery, crockery, mugs and glasses are part of the school’s daily schedule, services, and events including canteen, breakfast club, sporting and community events. The school participates annually in Earth Hour and solar panels reduce energy costs.
The school provides a creative-arts thanks to generous benefaction, including choir, recorder and dance classes; a band and a woodwind ensemble. Private lessons for piano, drums, clarinet, flute and guitar are also available with some scholarship support.
Students participate in sports gala days, NRL football competitions, basketball and newcombe ball.
A comprehensive transition program jointly organized with the onsite KU preschool and other local preschools ensures a smooth start for kindergarten students. Year 6 students have a comprehensive transition program with the local secondary school.
School facilities include a community room where Connect hosts daily playgroups, and TAFE also uses these facilities for community outreach adult education courses.
There is no school as personable where students received such individualised support and are encouraged to be leaders in many school areas.
