Established in 1918 and celebrating its Centenary this year, Blue Mountains Grammar School is an Anglican, co-educational day school for students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12.

As a community within a heritage listed National Park, the School has been operating Wilderness Education programs since 1982.  In addition to an outdoor education annual camping program (Years 2 to 10), the School offers a NESA-approved Stage 5 elective course of Wilderness Education.  This course includes environmental studies within its course theory content, together with the practical studies of environmental science through regular day excursions and 3- to 4-day expeditions.

In addition to the curriculum-based environmental studies offered to the students, the School has several initiatives which support the commitment made by our School community to preserving, protecting and valuing our unique environment, both locally and globally.  These include:

  1. daily monitoring of energy usage across the School’s sites, which has continued to significantly reduce our overall energy usage and minimise energy wastage

  2. a student driven recycling program

  3. a significant expansion of the School’s solar power capacity in 2018, increasing our solar usage by a further 60kw

  4. waste reduction programs such as a school-based “Keep Cup” initiative

In addition to the Wilderness Education curriculum, other areas of study such as Science, English, Geography and Visual Arts, continue to afford our students opportunities to consider their ‘footprint’ and to understand the importance of their role in the future of our environment.

Blue Mountains Grammar School also regularly participates in programs conducted by the broader Blue Mountains community, such as the Waterways Festival, Waste to Art and Rock Blitz.

The Board of Blue Mountains Grammar School, its staff and students are committed to the Blue Mountains World Heritage area and as part of the strategic plan continue to promote and improve environmental sustainability through our educational, co-curricular, leadership, management and community service programs.
