Parklands Kitchen Garden History:

In 1897, full-time professional gardener Thomas Kerslake was employed by John Pope, the founder of Karaweera, renamed to Parklands. Employed to maintain and develop the Karaweera gardens, the rectangular brick edged vegetable garden divided by red gravel paths and said to cover over four acres was the main attraction. Karaweera gardens supplied raspberries, red and white currants, gooseberries, strawberries, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, potatoes, parsnips, turnips, carrots, beets and rhubarb.

Parklands Kitchen Garden Today:

Following Thomas Kerslake’s vision, Parklands Country Garden and Lodges has developed a private kitchen garden, complete with 4000 sqm of vegetable garden beds, fruit orchards, rose gardens, a dedicated compost area, and a processing and packaging workshop. These gardens will provide seasonal fruit and vegetables for Parklands Country Garden and Lodges, Lilianfels Resort & Spa, Echoes Boutique Hotel & Restaurant and Hydro Majestic Hotel; all part of the Escarpment Group. Our vision is for each property to sustainably grow it’s own fresh produce.
